Best HR Tools
Important context: Live Digital is a recruitment agency — we have no commercial relationship with any HR software vendor listed in this guide. This is not a sponsored comparison. Our recommendations are based on what we see UK tech and SaaS companies using effectively, and the feedback we get from the People teams we work alongside.
The HR software market is vast, heavily marketed and prone to vendor noise. Every platform claims to be the best, every G2 review is partly curated, and most comparisons are influenced by affiliate relationships. This guide cuts through that — covering the tools that UK tech and SaaS companies actually use effectively, with honest assessments of where each one is strong and where it falls short.

Best HRIS / People Platforms for UK Businesses 2026
BambooHR — Best for Tech SMBs (under 200 employees)
What it’s good at: Clean, intuitive interface that employees actually use. Strong onboarding workflows, document management and time-off tracking. Good performance review module. Popular in US-headquartered tech companies with UK teams.
UK limitations: Built for the US market — UK holiday entitlement rules, statutory payment types and reporting requirements require workarounds. No native UK payroll. Best used with a UK payroll integration (BrightPay, Pento or Sage).
Pricing: Approximately £5–£8 per employee per month depending on package and headcount.
BrightHR — Best for UK-Specific Compliance
What it’s good at: Built entirely for the UK market. Strong on holiday management (correctly handles UK Working Time Regulations), absence tracking, rota management, and employment law guidance. BrightHR also provides access to employment law advisory content — useful for HR teams without a legal resource.
Limitations: Interface is dated compared to HiBob or BambooHR. Less suitable for fast-growth tech companies where employer branding and modern employee experience matter. Integrations are more limited than US-origin platforms.
Best for: Traditional UK SMBs (professional services, retail, hospitality) who need UK employment law support built in.
HiBob — Best for Fast-Growth, Remote-First Companies
What it’s good at: Modern, engaging interface. Excellent for remote and distributed teams — recognition features, pulse surveys and social elements that help maintain culture at scale. Strong integrations with UK payroll tools (Pento), ATS (Greenhouse, Workable), and productivity tools (Slack, Google). Very popular with European tech scale-ups.
Limitations: More expensive than BambooHR at comparable sizes. Some reporting features require premium packages. Best suited to companies that have dedicated People Ops resource to get full value from the platform’s depth.
Pricing: Approximately £6–£10 per employee per month. Minimum contract applies.
Personio — Best for European SMBs with Compliance Focus
What it’s good at: European-built platform with strong multi-country support (UK, Germany, Netherlands, Spain). Combines HRIS and ATS in a single platform — useful for companies that don’t want separate recruitment and HR tools. Good approval workflows and strong reporting.
Limitations: ATS is functional but not as strong as dedicated tools (Greenhouse, Lever) for high-volume or technical recruitment. Payroll is available in some markets but UK payroll typically requires a separate integration.
Rippling — Best for Companies Wanting HR + IT Integration
What it’s good at: Rippling uniquely combines HR and IT operations — onboarding a new employee can automatically provision their laptop, create their accounts and assign software licences. For companies where IT management is a real overhead, this integration is genuinely valuable. Strong US product with improving UK functionality.
UK limitations: Built primarily for the US market. UK payroll and employment law support has improved but is not as mature as dedicated UK platforms. Implementation can be complex.
Employment Hero — Best All-in-One for UK SMBs
What it’s good at: Combines HR, payroll, benefits and recruitment in one platform — reducing the integration complexity of running separate tools. UK payroll is built in and HMRC-compliant. Benefit: employer is genuinely one platform. Good employee self-service portal.
Limitations: The breadth means individual modules are sometimes less powerful than best-of-breed alternatives. If your payroll is very complex, or you need a highly capable ATS, you may outgrow individual modules faster than expected.
Workday — Best for Enterprise (1,000+ employees)
What it’s good at: Comprehensive enterprise HCM platform covering HR, payroll, finance and planning in a single system. Deep reporting, strong audit trails, configurable workflows. The benchmark for large organisations.
Limitations: Implementation typically takes 6–18 months and costs six figures. Pricing reflects the enterprise tier. Not appropriate for companies below ~1,000 employees unless there’s a specific compliance or integration requirement that demands it.

Best ATS (Recruitment Software) for 2026
Workable — Best Mid-Market ATS
Strong multi-channel job posting, good candidate pipeline management, and a built-in sourcing tool. Widely used by UK scale-ups. Integrates with most major HRIS platforms. Pricing is accessible at Series A/B scale.
Greenhouse — Best for Structured Hiring at Scale
The preferred ATS for companies that take hiring process quality seriously. Structured interviewing, scorecard-driven evaluation, strong analytics on hiring funnel. Used by many Series B+ tech companies. More configuration required than Workable but produces more rigorous outcomes.
Monday.com (HR module) — Best for Teams Already on Monday
If your company uses Monday.com for project management, the HR and recruitment templates are a low-friction option for sub-10 hires per year. Not a substitute for a dedicated ATS at volume, but avoids tool proliferation for early-stage businesses.

UK-Specific Considerations When Choosing HR Software
- UK employment law built in: Many US-origin platforms require configuration to handle UK-specific rules (Working Time Regulations, holiday entitlement calculations including Bank Holidays, statutory sick pay eligibility). Verify before committing.
- GDPR / UK GDPR compliance: All HR data about UK employees falls under UK GDPR. Confirm your platform stores data in UK/EU data centres and provides the data processing agreements your DPO needs.
- IR35 and contractor management: If you use contractors, your HR/payroll system needs to support contractor management and IR35 status recording. Not all platforms handle this well.
- Right to Work checking: Under the Immigration Act 2014, UK employers must check and record employees’ right to work. Some HR platforms integrate with right-to-work verification services; others leave this entirely to the employer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best HRIS for small UK businesses?
For small UK businesses under 100 employees: BrightHR (strong UK compliance), BambooHR (clean interface, popular in tech), or Employment Hero (all-in-one including payroll). The best choice depends on whether you need UK payroll built in or will integrate a separate tool.
What HR software do fast-growing SaaS companies use?
At Series A–B, the most common stack is HiBob or Personio for HR + Pento for payroll + Greenhouse or Workable for recruitment. At Series C+, some companies move to Workday for a unified enterprise platform.
What is the difference between an HRIS and an ATS?
An HRIS manages the post-hire employment lifecycle — records, payroll, performance, offboarding. An ATS manages the pre-hire recruitment pipeline — applications, interviews, offers. Most companies need both, and they should be integrated so new hire data flows from ATS to HRIS automatically.
